Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Immunology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) plays a role in inflammatory processes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate alicaforsen as a potential treatment for ulcerative colitis.

Main Methods:

  • Alicatorsen is an RNase H-dependent antisense inhibitor.
  • It targets intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1).

Main Results:

  • Phase II clinical trials are currently underway.

Conclusions:

  • Alicatorsen shows potential for treating ulcerative colitis.
