Summary

Genetic analysis of four West African ethnic groups revealed minimal population substructure. This finding indicates that ethnicity is unlikely to impact genetic studies in this region, supporting reliable association studies in diverse African populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate population structure in four West African ethnic groups within the Africa America Diabetes Mellitus (AADM) Study.
  • To assess the impact of ethnicity on genetic stratification in West African populations.
  • To determine the suitability of these groups for genetic association studies.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 372 autosomal microsatellite loci in 493 unrelated individuals.
  • Utilized data from Akan and Gaa-Adangbe (Ghana), Yoruba and Igbo (Nigeria).
  • Employed population genetic structure analysis and Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA).

  • No significant population genetic structure was detected across the overall sample.
