Summary

Using a placebo regimen mimicking highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) provided valuable education on medication adherence for medical students. While not improving attitudes on adherence, the experience was deemed highly useful by participants.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Pharmacology
  • Patient Adherence

Background:

  • Medication adherence is a critical factor in treatment efficacy, particularly for complex regimens like highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
  • Understanding patient challenges with adherence is essential for healthcare professionals.
  • Innovative educational methods are needed to effectively teach medical students about adherence issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a placebo medication regimen on medical students' understanding of adherence challenges.
  • To assess the educational value of a simulated highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimen in a medical clerkship.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized trial involving third-year medical students during their medicine clerkship.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 23 students received a 2-week placebo regimen simulating HAART.
  • 15 students served as a control group.
  • Main Results:

    • The placebo intervention did not significantly alter attitudes or beliefs regarding medication nonadherence as measured by an evaluation instrument.
    • All 23 students who underwent the placebo regimen reported the experience as useful and possessing learning value in post-intervention interviews.
    • Qualitative feedback highlighted the intervention as an "eye-opening" method for teaching adherence issues.

    Conclusions:

    • Simulating complex medication regimens with placebos offers a unique, experiential learning opportunity for medical students regarding adherence.
    • While objective measures of attitude change were not observed, subjective student feedback strongly supports the educational utility of this approach.
    • This method provides valuable insights into the practical challenges of medication adherence, enhancing future clinical practice.
