Summary

Cervical arthroplasty using the Bryan disc prosthesis unexpectedly led to bony fusion in two patients. This case series is the first to report this finding after cervical disc replacement surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Spine surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomedical engineering

Background:

  • Cervical arthroplasty aims to preserve motion following anterior cervical discectomy.
  • The Bryan disc prosthesis is a device used for cervical disc replacement.
  • Bony fusion is typically an undesired outcome in arthroplasty procedures.

Observation:

  • Two patients underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with a Bryan disc prosthesis for herniated discs at C5-C6.
  • Patients experienced immediate postoperative pain relief.
  • Follow-up at 1 and 2 years revealed radiographic evidence of bony fusion around the prosthesis.

Findings:

  • This study reports the first instance of bony fusion occurring after cervical arthroplasty with the Bryan disc prosthesis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The unexpected bony fusion did not compromise the patients' pain-free status or functional recovery.
  • Implications:

    • The findings suggest a potential for spontaneous bony fusion with the Bryan disc prosthesis, challenging its primary goal of motion preservation.
    • Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this fusion and its long-term clinical significance.
    • This phenomenon may influence patient selection and surgical technique considerations for cervical disc arthroplasty.
