Gallbladder varices, a rare complication of portal hypertension, were accurately diagnosed using color Doppler sonography. This noninvasive technique aids in assessing portal hemodynamics and detecting gallbladder varices in patients with portal cavernoma.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Radiology
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Gallbladder varices are uncommon ectopic varices associated with portal hypertension.
  • Extrahepatic portal vein occlusion can lead to recurrent esophageal varices bleeding.

Observation:

  • A case of gallbladder varices was diagnosed using color Doppler sonography.
  • A 51-year-old woman with recurrent esophageal varices bleeding underwent endoscopic band ligation.
  • Doppler imaging revealed portal cavernoma and gallbladder varices.

Findings:

  • Color Doppler sonography effectively diagnosed gallbladder varices.
  • Endoscopic band ligation controlled bleeding from esophageal varices.
  • No enlargement or complications of gallbladder varices were observed during follow-up.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Color Doppler sonography is valuable for assessing portal hemodynamics and detecting gallbladder varices.
  • Accurate preoperative diagnosis of gallbladder varices enhances surgical vigilance during biliary tract procedures.
  • This diagnosis helps prevent hazardous complications in patients with portal hypertension.
