Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Abdominal Imaging
  • Surgical Case Reports

Background:

  • Recurrent abdominal pain can be a challenging clinical presentation.
  • Paraduodenal hernias are rare congenital abnormalities of the mesentery.
  • Accurate diagnosis of internal hernias is crucial for appropriate management.

Observation:

  • A 52-year-old woman presented with acute exacerbation of chronic abdominal pain.
  • Spiral computed tomography (CT) revealed a left paraduodenal hernia.
  • No signs of intestinal obstruction or ischemia were present on initial imaging.

Findings:

  • The patient's abdominal pain resolved spontaneously during hospitalization.
  • Follow-up CT demonstrated complete regression of the left paraduodenal hernia.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Conservative management led to a favorable outcome in this case.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the possibility of spontaneous resolution of paraduodenal hernias.
    • Non-operative management may be a viable option for select patients with paraduodenal hernias.
    • CT imaging is essential for diagnosing and monitoring paraduodenal hernias.
