Hydatid disease, a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus larvae, rarely affects bones. This study reviewed 12 bone hydatidosis cases, highlighting skull and iliac bone as common sites.

Area of Science:

  • Parasitology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Skeletal System Pathology

Context:

  • Hydatidosis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus larval forms.
  • While liver and lungs are common sites, bone involvement is infrequent, representing 0.9-2% of cases.
  • This study retrospectively analyzed bone hydatidosis cases over a defined period.

Purpose:

  • To document the occurrence and characteristics of hydatid disease affecting the bone.
  • To identify common skeletal locations and assess the incidence of primary versus secondary bone lesions.

Summary:

  • Twelve cases of bone hydatidosis were identified between 1982 and 1988.
  • Lesions were distributed across the skull (4), iliac bone (4), scapula (1), ribs (1), femur (1), and fibula (1).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Although generally considered primary, three cases showed association with visceral hydatid locations.
  • Impact:

    • Contributes to understanding the rare presentation of hydatid disease in skeletal sites.
    • Provides data on the anatomical distribution of bone hydatidosis.
    • Highlights the importance of considering hydatid disease in the differential diagnosis of bone lesions, even in the absence of visceral involvement.
