Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how early perceptual processing demands affect startle eyeblink modification.
  • To determine if visual stimulus clarity influences the temporal dynamics of startle modification during a continuous performance test (CPT).

Main Methods:

  • Participants completed a CPT with either clear or degraded visual stimuli.
  • A startling acoustic stimulus was presented at 120, 240, or 1200 ms after visual targets or nontargets.
  • Startle eyeblink responses were measured to assess modification (inhibition).

Conclusions:

  • Attentional processes appear to operate similarly for both clear and degraded stimuli at longer stimulus onset asynchronies.
