Personal stereo player (PSP) use in noisy environments did not significantly increase noise injury risk. Average noise exposure was 79.8 dB, with males exposed to higher levels than females.

Background:

  • Concerns exist regarding noise-induced hearing loss from personal stereo player (PSP) use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure noise exposure levels during typical personal stereo player (PSP) use in daily activities.
  • To assess the risk of noise injury and hearing loss associated with PSP usage.

Main Methods:

  • Noise levels were measured in 55 individuals using PSPs in noisy environments.
  • A-weighted, 8-hour equivalent continuous noise exposure levels were calculated.
  • Data were analyzed for differences between sexes and correlation with self-reported hearing issues.

Main Results:

  • Average noise exposure was 79.8 dB, with males averaging 80.6 dB and females 75.3 dB.
  • No statistically significant correlation was found between PSP noise exposure and self-reported hearing loss or tinnitus.
  • Measured noise levels did not indicate a significant risk of noise injury from PSP use alone.

Conclusions:

  • Current personal stereo player (PSP) usage patterns in noisy settings may not pose a significant risk for noise-induced hearing injury.
  • Further research may be warranted to understand long-term effects and individual susceptibility.
