Menopause is associated with reduced platelet activation, indicated by lower P-selectin and GPIIb-IIIa expression. This finding suggests potential changes in cardiovascular disease risk factors during the climacterium.

  • Platelet activation is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
  • Sex hormones, particularly estradiol, are suspected to influence platelet function, with lower levels in menopausal women potentially impacting cardiovascular health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of the climacterium, specifically the transition before and after menopause, on platelet activation markers.
  • To compare platelet activation status in premenopausal women versus postmenopausal women.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study compared 37 female patients: 10 premenopausal (Group A) and 27 postmenopausal (Group B).
  • Platelet activation markers P-selectin and glycoprotein IIb-IIIa complex (GPIIb-IIIa) were measured using flow cytometry.

    • GPIIb-IIIa binding indices were also significantly lower in postmenopausal women (Group B: 16.2 +/- 3.1) versus premenopausal women (Group A: 18.8 +/- 2.3; p < 0.0018).
    • Plasma thromboxane B2 levels did not differ significantly between the groups (p = 0.85).

    Conclusions:

    • The climacterium and associated low estradiol status correlate with decreased platelet activation in women.
    • Further research with larger sample sizes is warranted to establish definitive conclusions regarding cardiovascular disease implications.
