Background:

  • Pediatric arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) present unique treatment challenges due to complex shapes and locations.
  • Conventional treatments may have limitations for inoperable or complex pediatric AVMs.
  • Intensity-modulated radiosurgery (IMRS) is explored as a precise therapeutic option.

Observation:

  • Seven pediatric patients with inoperable, complex-shaped AVMs were treated with IMRS.
  • Prescribed doses ranged from 17.5 to 20 Gy, with a median of 18 Gy.
  • Treatment planning prioritized dose conformity using inverse planning optimization.

Findings:

  • IMRS plans achieved high conformity (median CI 1.07) and homogeneity (median HI 1.12).
  • Preliminary outcomes showed complete AVM obliteration in two patients and partial obliteration in three.
