Summary

Erectile dysfunction and osteoporosis are common in men over 50. This study found these conditions increase with age but are not significantly linked to each other or hormonal changes.

Background:

Erectile dysfunction (ED) and osteoporosis are prevalent conditions in aging men.
The potential relationship between ED, bone mineral density (BMD), and hormonal status in older men requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the prevalence of erectile dysfunction and assess bone mineral density in men aged 50 years and over.
To investigate the association between erectile dysfunction, bone mineral density, and serum hormone concentrations in this demographic.

Main Methods:

Seventy-six men aged 50+ underwent interviews using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) for ED assessment.
Bone mineral density was measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
Serum hormone concentrations were measured for all participants.

Main Results:

Erectile dysfunction was diagnosed in 75% of the participants.
Osteoporosis was present in 13.2% and osteopenia in 59.2% of men.
No significant correlation was found between hormone levels and ED or BMD.
The prevalence of ED and osteoporosis increased with age, but their association was not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

Both erectile dysfunction and osteoporosis are common in elderly men and increase with age.
Hormonal changes do not appear to be the primary determinant for ED or osteoporosis in this population.
The study suggests that ED and osteoporosis in elderly men are largely independent conditions.
