Pneumococcal vaccination coverage is very low in high-risk patients, with most unaware of the free vaccine. General practitioners (GPs) need more information and trust to improve vaccination rates.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health
  • Vaccinology

Background:

  • Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) poses a significant risk to individuals with underlying health conditions.
  • Pneumococcal vaccination is a key preventive measure against IPD, yet uptake remains suboptimal in many populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess pneumococcal vaccination coverage among high-risk patients in a tertiary care hospital.
  • To investigate the attitudes and knowledge of general practitioners (GPs) regarding pneumococcal vaccination in Slovakia.

Main Methods:

  • A survey of 154 outpatients and hospitalized patients with IPD risk factors was conducted.
  • Medical records were used to verify patient data.
  • An anonymous questionnaire assessed the knowledge and attitudes of 77 GPs in two Slovak districts.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 83.1% of surveyed patients had at least one risk factor for IPD, but only 6.3% had received the pneumococcal vaccine.
  • Vaccination coverage was consistently low across all age groups and risk factor categories.
  • 94.9% of GPs reported insufficient information on the polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine, and 28.2% expressed general distrust in vaccination.

Conclusions:

  • There is a critical need to improve pneumococcal vaccination rates among high-risk individuals.
  • Enhanced education and addressing vaccine hesitancy among GPs are crucial for increasing vaccine uptake.
  • Healthcare professionals, particularly GPs, play a pivotal role in informing patients about vaccine benefits and availability.
