Summary

High blood pressure is strongly linked to hypermetropia (farsightedness). This study suggests individuals with hypermetropia should monitor their blood pressure, as this eye condition may indicate hypertension.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the refractive state of the eye and high blood pressure in a representative population.
  • To determine if hypermetropia is more prevalent in individuals with essential hypertension compared to normotensive controls.

  • A case-control study was conducted with 321 patients diagnosed with essential hypertension and 188 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects.

    • Patients with essential hypertension exhibited a significantly higher mean spherical equivalent (+0.88 +/- 1.34 diopters) compared to control subjects (-0.26 +/- 1.12 diopters) (P < .0001).
    • Hypermetropia was observed in 61.4% of hypertensive patients, versus only 18.1% in normotensive controls (P < .0001).
    • A strong association was found between essential arterial hypertension and hypermetropia.

    Conclusions:

    • This study reveals a previously unreported strong association between essential arterial hypertension and hypermetropia.
    • The findings suggest that hypermetropia may serve as an indicator for hypertension.
    • It is recommended that individuals with hypermetropia undergo regular blood pressure checks, especially if they have not had recent systemic examinations.
