Summary

A 4-month-old fitch experienced severe hemorrhagic enteritis unresponsive to treatment. Post-mortem examination revealed systemic Candida tropicalis infection affecting multiple organs and lymphoid tissues.

Background:

  • Hemorrhagic enteritis is a significant cause of morbidity in young ferrets.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the cause of severe, treatment-refractory hemorrhagic enteritis in a young ferret.
  • To characterize the pathological findings and identify the causative agent.

  • Necropsy and histopathological examination of tissues from a deceased ferret.
  • Microbiological culture and isolation of fungal organisms from internal organs.

  • Histopathology revealed lesions in the myocardium and renal medulla associated with fungal elements (mycelia, pseudomycelia, blastospores).
  • Significant lymphoid depletion was observed in the spleen and lymph nodes.
  • Candida tropicalis was successfully isolated from the liver and spleen.

  • Candida tropicalis infection was identified as the cause of the severe enteritis and systemic illness in the ferret.
  • Fungal infections should be considered in cases of severe gastrointestinal disease in ferrets, especially when unresponsive to conventional therapy.
