Orbital cellulitis following cataract surgery.

Summary

Orbital cellulitis is a rare complication after cataract surgery. Prompt antibiotic treatment led to good visual recovery in a patient, suggesting the anesthetic block as a potential entry point for infection.

Background:

Cataract surgery is a common procedure with a low risk of complications.
Orbital cellulitis, an infection of the tissues around the eye, is an extremely rare post-operative complication.

Observation:

A case of orbital cellulitis developing less than 24 hours after cataract surgery is presented.
The patient received standard pre-operative care, including an anesthetic block.

Findings:

The patient responded well to systemic antibiotic therapy.
Good visual acuity was ultimately achieved in the affected eye.
The anesthetic block administered before surgery is the most probable route of pathogen entry.

Implications:

This case highlights the possibility of rapid orbital cellulitis post-cataract surgery.

While antiseptic skin preparation is recommended, it may not always prevent infection via the anesthetic block.

Further research into preventative measures for infection transmission during anesthetic block procedures is warranted.
