Summary

Osteochondroma of the lunate bone can cause wrist snapping and finger numbness by impinging the median nerve. Surgical removal of the lunate osteochondroma resolved these symptoms in a teenage patient.

Background:

  • Osteochondromas are benign bone tumors, most commonly occurring in long bones.
  • Carpal osteochondromas are rare, with only a few cases previously reported in medical literature.
  • Wrist pain and snapping are common symptoms that warrant thorough investigation.

Observation:

  • A 16-year-old male presented with a 6-year history of right wrist snapping and middle finger numbness.
  • Surgical exploration revealed a lunate osteochondroma.
  • The median nerve was observed to become impinged on the osteochondroma during wrist extension and slip over it during rapid flexion.

Findings:

  • The mechanical impingement of the median nerve by the lunate osteochondroma was identified as the cause of the snapping phenomenon and neurological symptoms.
