Summary
Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is a rare cancer. This case study details a 75-year-old woman successfully treated for a giant PTC neck mass with surgery and radioiodine therapy, showing no recurrence.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Endocrinology
- Radiology
Background:
- Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is an uncommon endocrine malignancy with generally good prognosis.
- PTC incidence is higher in younger individuals, women, and those with prior neck radiation exposure.
Observation:
- A 75-year-old woman presented with a decade-long history of a giant neck mass.
- Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large cystic lesion with a solid component, indicative of PTC.
- No distant metastasis was detected at the time of diagnosis.
Findings:
- The patient underwent surgical resection of the papillary thyroid carcinoma.
- Postoperative radioiodine (131I) treatment was administered.
- One-year follow-up showed no evidence of tumor recurrence.
Implications:
- This case highlights the successful management of a large PTC with a combination of surgery and radioiodine therapy.
- Early detection and comprehensive treatment are crucial for favorable outcomes in advanced PTC cases.
- Further research into the long-term outcomes of giant PTC is warranted.
