Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Outcomes
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Postoperative small bowel obstruction is a known complication following appendectomy.
  • The incidence of this adverse effect varies significantly between medical centers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of small bowel obstruction in patients who underwent appendectomy.
  • To identify potential risk factors associated with this complication.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of case notes for patients who underwent appendectomy between January 1998 and December 2003.
  • Analysis of clinical data for patients readmitted due to adhesive small bowel obstruction.

Main Results:

  • Six hundred and seven patients were included in the study.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A total of six patients (1%) developed intestinal obstruction.
  • Patients readmitted for obstruction experienced an average of two readmissions.
  • Conclusions:

    • The incidence of small bowel obstruction following appendectomy is low.
    • Key risk factors were identified and strategies for avoidance were proposed.
