Summary

Dark clothing significantly attracts fewer ticks than light clothing. This finding suggests wearing dark apparel may help reduce exposure to ticks and prevent tick-borne diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether light or dark clothing is less attractive to Ixodes ricinus.
  • To determine the optimal clothing color for minimizing tick exposure and preventing tick-borne illnesses.

  • Ten participants walked in tick-endemic areas, alternating between wearing light and dark clothing.
  • Nymphal and adult ticks found on the clothing were systematically collected and counted.

Main Results:

  • A total of 886 nymphal ticks were collected during the study.
  • Participants consistently had more ticks on light clothing compared to dark clothing across all exposure periods.
  • On average, 20.8 more ticks per person were found on light clothing.

Conclusions:

  • Dark clothing appears to be less attractive to Ixodes ricinus ticks.
  • Wearing dark clothing may be a practical strategy to reduce tick encounters and mitigate the risk of tick-borne diseases.
