Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) experience more psychological distress than the general population but less than psychiatric outpatients. Early detection of depression and distress is crucial for COPD management.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Pulmonology
- Psychological distress assessment
Background:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung condition.
- Psychological distress is common in chronic illness but under-assessed in COPD.
- Comparing distress levels in COPD patients to general and psychiatric populations is important.
Purpose of the Study:
- To quantify psychological distress in COPD patients.
- To compare distress levels in COPD patients with the general population and psychiatric outpatients.
- To explore the relationship between COPD severity and psychological distress.
Main Methods:
- Utilized the Dutch version of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R).
- Recruited 118 COPD patients, 500 general population subjects, and 500 psychiatric outpatients.
- Compared psychological distress scores across the three groups.
Main Results:
- COPD patients reported significantly higher psychological distress than the general population.
- COPD patients reported significantly lower psychological distress than psychiatric outpatients.
- No significant association between COPD severity and distress, but severe COPD increased depression risk.
Conclusions:
- Psychological distress is elevated in COPD patients compared to the general population.
- Depression in COPD patients presents similarly to psychiatric outpatients.
- The Beck Depression Inventory and SCL-90-R are valuable tools for identifying distress and depression in clinical COPD settings.
