Summary

Dermatomyositis/polymyositis patients have a higher risk of head and neck cancers, particularly nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Early endoscopic screening is recommended for these patients to detect potential malignancies.

Context:

  • Dermatomyositis/polymyositis (DM/PM) is a rare idiopathic inflammatory myopathy.
  • An association between DM/PM and malignancy has been reported.
  • The specific link between DM/PM and head and neck cancers requires further elucidation.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the relationship between dermatomyositis/polymyositis and the occurrence of head and neck malignancies.
  • To identify the types of head and neck cancers associated with DM/PM.
  • To determine the incidence of head and neck malignancy in DM/PM patients.

Summary:

  • A 10-year retrospective study of 136 DM/PM patients identified 17 cases of malignancy.
  • Of these, 6 cases (35.29%) were head and neck malignancies, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and hypopharynx carcinoma.
