    Summary

    Using guidewires for peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement does not increase patient risk for complications like phlebitis. This comparative study found similar complication rates between PICC lines inserted with and without guidewires.

    Background:

    • Limited research exists on guidewire use during peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) insertion.
    • Existing literature offers only speculation on the advantages and disadvantages of guidewire use in PICC placement.

    • To investigate the practice of using guidewires for peripherally inserted central catheter insertion.
    • To determine if guidewire use increases the risk of catheter-related complications, specifically phlebitis.
