Early Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in children may reduce the risk of IgE sensitization. This protective effect is strengthened when cytomegalovirus (CMV) is also present.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the relationship between serostatus for 13 viruses and IgE sensitization in 2-year-old children.
  • To investigate potential interactions between cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) regarding IgE sensitization.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective follow-up of 246 infants to age 2.
  • Clinical examinations, skin prick tests, and specific IgE analyses were performed.
  • Serological analysis for multiple viruses including adenovirus, influenza, CMV, and EBV.

Main Results:

  • IgE sensitization was significantly less common in children seropositive for EBV (aOR=0.34).
  • A combined seropositivity for CMV and EBV showed a further significant reduction in IgE sensitization risk (aOR for interaction=0.10).
  • No significant association was found between sensitization and serostatus for other tested viruses.

Conclusions:

  • Acquisition of EBV infection in early childhood is associated with a decreased risk of IgE sensitization.
  • Coinfection with CMV appears to enhance the protective effect of EBV against IgE sensitization.
