Summary

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between various clinical and biochemical factors and the risk of acute ischemic stroke.
  • To identify significant risk factors through case-control analysis and logistic regression.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted involving 204 patients with acute ischemic stroke.
  • Matched pair odds ratios were calculated for hypertension, ECG abnormality, heart disease, diabetes, smoking, and alcohol intake.
  • Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify significant independent factors.

  • Hypertension (OR 3.95), ECG abnormality (OR 2.1), heart disease (OR 2.1), diabetes (OR 1.7), and smoking (OR 1.8) were significant risk factors.

  • Lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and uric acid levels, and a higher total cholesterol to HDL (TC/HDL) ratio were significantly associated with stroke.
  • Combined risk was higher with hypertension, heart disease, and low HDL cholesterol (<45 mg/dl).

Conclusions:

  • Hypertension, heart disease, lower HDL cholesterol, lower uric acid, and higher TC/HDL ratio are significant risk factors for acute ischemic stroke.
  • These findings highlight the importance of managing these factors for stroke prevention.
