Summary

Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is a lung disorder characterized by inflammation and granulation tissue in airways. While often responsive to corticosteroids, relapses are common after treatment cessation.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is a pathological syndrome associated with various pulmonary inflammatory conditions.
  • It involves the formation of granulation tissue within the distal airspaces, characterized by fibroblasts and collagen.
  • BOOP can be secondary to lung injury (infection, drug toxicity), connective tissue diseases, or transplantation, or it can be idiopathic (cryptogenic organizing pneumonia).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the pathological features, clinical presentations, and therapeutic responses of Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP).
  • To highlight the diagnostic imaging characteristics and the typical course of the disease.

Main Methods:

  • Review of pathological findings defining BOOP.
  • Analysis of clinical presentations, including idiopathic forms (cryptogenic organizing pneumonia).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evaluation of imaging findings (patchy, migratory, diffuse, or focal opacities).
  • Main Results:

    • BOOP presents as granulation tissue buds in distal airspaces.
    • Imaging often shows patchy, migratory alveolar opacities, but other patterns exist.
    • Corticosteroid treatment typically yields significant improvement, though relapses are frequent.

    Conclusions:

    • Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is a distinct clinicoradiological syndrome with varied etiologies.
    • The condition characteristically responds well to corticosteroids but is prone to recurrence.
    • Understanding its diverse presentations is crucial for diagnosis and management.
