Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Wound Management
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum (PPG) is a rare inflammatory skin condition.
  • Limited literature exists on effective management strategies for PPG.
  • Case series reporting can inform treatment approaches for uncommon diseases like PPG.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of topical corticosteroid therapy in managing peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum.
  • To report clinical experience with 14 consecutive cases of PPG treated with topical corticosteroids.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical diagnosis of PPG was established by a trained dermatologist.
  • Patients were treated with topical corticosteroids, with or without dressing changes.
  • Investigations were utilized as necessary to confirm diagnosis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Topical corticosteroids, alone or with dressing changes, were the primary treatment modality.
  • Ulcer resolution was achieved in 8 out of 14 (57%) cases within 3 months.
  • A silicone-based dressing applied directly to the wound facilitated treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Topical corticosteroid therapy is a viable and effective treatment for a significant proportion of PPG cases.
  • This management approach allows patients to continue using standard stoma care products.
  • Topical treatment minimizes potential side effects associated with systemic therapies.
