Area of Science:

  • Medical Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Fusariosis is a fungal infection typically affecting immunocompromised individuals.
  • Breast involvement is an uncommon presentation of fusariosis.
  • Diabetes mellitus is a known risk factor for opportunistic fungal infections.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old female diabetic patient presented with an unusual manifestation of breast fusariosis.
  • Fine needle aspirates (FNA) revealed characteristic fungal hyphae in potassium hydroxide and Leishman stains.
  • Culture of FNA samples confirmed the presence of Fusarium solani.

Findings:

  • The patient exhibited a breast abscess due to Fusarium solani infection.
  • Microscopic examination of FNA smears was crucial for diagnosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Fungal hyphae were identified amidst inflammatory cells, including lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils.
  • Implications:

    • This case represents a potentially novel presentation of breast fusariosis in India.
    • Early diagnosis and appropriate antifungal therapy are essential for successful management.
    • Further research into Fusarium species' pathogenicity in non-immunocompromised hosts may be warranted.
