Grand rounds: what is the point?

Background:

Traditional medical grand rounds face challenges in the modern era.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the current state of grand rounds in Canadian medical schools.
To understand the perceived effectiveness and challenges of grand rounds.

Main Methods:

A survey was distributed to 16 Canadian medical schools.
Questionnaires were sent to obstetrics and gynecology department chairpersons or grand round coordinators.
The Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology (APOG) facilitated data collection.

Main Results:

Historically large, attentive audiences have diminished.
Current audiences are often sparse and inattentive.
The survey aims to quantify the current status and engagement levels.

Conclusions:

The traditional grand round format may require re-evaluation.
Adaptations may be necessary to maintain relevance and engagement in medical education.
Further research is needed to explore alternative or modified educational strategies.
