Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Prosthodontics
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Scleroderma, a connective tissue disease, can cause microstomia, limiting oral opening.
  • Limited oral opening presents significant challenges in prosthetic rehabilitation for edentulous patients.

Observation:

  • A total edentulous patient with scleroderma-induced microstomia required prosthetic management.
  • Conventional impression and denture fabrication techniques are difficult with severely limited mouth openings.

Findings:

  • Sectional trays and a collapsed mandibular denture were fabricated for the patient.
  • A lingual midline hinge facilitated easy insertion and adequate function of the collapsed denture.
  • The cast hinge design proved cost-effective and simplified laboratory procedures.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This technique provides a viable solution for managing edentulous patients with microstomia.
  • The collapsed denture design improves functional outcomes and patient quality of life.
  • The simplified laboratory technique makes this approach accessible for routine clinical use.
