Summary

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a growing concern. In Hawaii, MRSA prevalence increased in both adults and children from 2000-2002, with adult MRSA showing higher resistance.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Microbiology
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a significant threat to public health.
  • Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance is crucial for tracking emerging pathogens.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze epidemiologic trends of MRSA in Hawaii from 2000 to 2002.
  • To compare MRSA characteristics in pediatric versus adult patient populations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a statewide, population-based antimicrobial resistance surveillance system.
  • Analyzed S. aureus isolates from outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Stratified data by age group (pediatric and adult).

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • MRSA constituted 26% of S. aureus isolates (8,206/31,482) between 2000-2002.
  • MRSA proportions significantly increased in both outpatient and inpatient settings (p<0.01).
  • Adult MRSA increased from 24% to 30% (p<0.01), while pediatric MRSA remained stable (25% to 27%, p>0.05).
  • Adult MRSA showed high resistance to non-beta-lactams; pediatric outpatient MRSA remained largely susceptible.

Conclusions:

  • MRSA prevalence rose in Hawaii during the study period.
  • Adult MRSA demonstrated increasing resistance, unlike pediatric MRSA.
  • Distinct resistance patterns observed between adult and pediatric MRSA isolates warrant further investigation.
