Summary

Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) accurately images root canal fillings, differentiating gutta-percha and sealer. This non-destructive method shows high correlation with histology for evaluating root canal treatments.

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Imaging
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Accurate assessment of root canal filling is crucial for endodontic treatment success.
  • Conventional imaging methods may have limitations in visualizing root canal filling details.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy and potential of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) for imaging root canal fillings.
  • To compare micro-CT imaging with histological analysis of filled root canals.

Main Methods:

  • Extracted maxillary teeth underwent root canal preparation and filling with gutta-percha and sealer.
  • Filled root canals were imaged using micro-CT at high resolution (<11 microm).
  • Micro-CT data were compared qualitatively and quantitatively with histological sections.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Micro-CT clearly visualized root canal fillings, differentiating them from canal walls.
  • Individual gutta-percha cones and sealer were discernible with micro-CT.
  • High and significant correlation (r=0.992 for filling area, r=0.968 for gutta-percha cones) was found between micro-CT and histology.

Conclusions:

  • Micro-computed tomography is a highly accurate, non-destructive technique for evaluating root canal fillings.
  • Micro-CT provides reliable qualitative and quantitative data comparable to histology for assessing root canal fill quality.
