Summary

Persistent hypotony after cataract surgery in patients with prior eye trauma can be successfully treated with cyclodialysis cleft repair. Surgical intervention resolved hypotony and improved vision in all cases.

Background:

  • Phacoemulsification cataract surgery is a common procedure.
  • Persistent hypotony can occur postoperatively, especially in eyes with prior trauma.

Observation:

  • A retrospective analysis of 3 male patients with persistent hypotony after cataract surgery was conducted.
  • All patients had a history of significant blunt ocular trauma.
  • The hypotony was attributed to a pre-existing, dormant cyclodialysis cleft activated by surgery.

Findings:

  • Surgical repair of cyclodialysis clefts, including cryopexy and limbal-based scleral flap techniques, was performed.
  • All patients achieved successful closure of the clefts.
