Summary

While most mothers in Israel initiate breastfeeding, rates drop significantly by six months. Targeted support is needed for less educated women and those with fewer children to improve sustained breastfeeding.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate breastfeeding patterns in the Tel Aviv district.
  • To identify associations between sociodemographic factors and breastfeeding duration.

Main Methods:

  • Telephone interviews were conducted with mothers of infants aged 2, 4, 6, and 12 months.
  • Exclusion criteria included low birth weight infants and multiple gestations.
  • Stepwise logistic regression analyzed the link between breastfeeding and sociodemographic characteristics.

  • Breastfeeding initiation was 78.5%. Rates at 2, 4, 6, and 12 months were 55.8%, 36.8%, 29.9%, and 11.8% respectively.
  • Exclusive breastfeeding was low: 35.8% at 2 months and 11.2% at 6 months.
  • Grand multiparas and women married to Yeshiva students, with over 13 years of education, or on maternity leave showed higher breastfeeding rates.

Conclusions:

  • Despite high initiation, only 29.9% of mothers breastfed for 6 months.
  • Many infants receive formula early, even when breastfed.
  • Breastfeeding promotion should target less educated women, homemakers, and families with fewer children.
