Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia precipitated by weight loss.

Summary

Weight loss can reveal insulinomas, causing hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia, often postprandially, not just with weight gain and fasting symptoms. This case highlights how reduced insulin resistance from weight loss accelerates diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Metabolic Disorders

Background:

  • Insulinomas classically present with weight gain and fasting hypoglycemia.
  • Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia is a condition of excessive insulin secretion leading to low blood glucose levels.

Observation:

  • A case of hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia was precipitated by voluntary weight loss.
  • The patient experienced postprandial hypoglycemia, not nocturnal hypoglycemia.
  • Diagnosis was achieved without hospitalization.

Findings:

  • Voluntary weight loss reduced insulin resistance, unmasking an underlying insulinoma.
  • The presentation deviated from the classic weight gain and fasting hypoglycemia pattern.

Implications:

  • Weight loss can accelerate the clinical presentation of asymptomatic insulinomas by decreasing insulin resistance.
