Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Developmental Pediatrics
  • Orthopedics

Background:

  • Positional plagiocephaly is a common condition in infants.
  • Conservative interventions are frequently used to manage this condition.
  • Evidence regarding the effectiveness of these interventions requires synthesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize current research on the effectiveness of conservative interventions for positional plagiocephaly in infants.
  • To assess the quality and bias of included studies.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of papers published between 1983 and 2003 from 13 databases.
  • Inclusion criteria focused on conservative interventions for positional plagiocephaly.
  • Methodological quality and bias assessment of included studies.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Sixteen papers met inclusion criteria (12 case series, 4 comparative studies).
  • Methodological quality was generally moderate to poor, necessitating cautious interpretation.
  • Counterpositioning, with or without physiotherapy or helmet therapy, may reduce skull deformity.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence suggests potential benefits of counterpositioning and adjunctive therapies for positional plagiocephaly.
  • The relative effectiveness of different conservative interventions remains unclear.
  • Further high-quality research is needed, including the development of standardized outcome measures.
