Exercise Stress Test

Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

  • Cross-sectional study of 544 working-age men.
  • Collected data on lifetime work, leisure activities, and back pain via questionnaires.
  • Measured isometric back extension endurance holding time (seconds) and reasons for test termination.

Main Results:

  • Fatigue was the most common reason for test termination (62.5%).
  • Lower extremity pain (12.6%) and back pain (3.2%) were other reported reasons.
  • History of frequent/intense low back pain increased likelihood of termination due to back pain.
  • Longer holding times were associated with fatigue termination.
  • Competitive sports history was linked to higher holding times and increased likelihood of pain-related termination.

Conclusions:

  • Isometric back extension endurance testing is primarily limited by muscle fatigue.
  • Individuals with a history of significant low back pain experience reduced performance time.
  • Test termination reasons provide insights into performance determinants and underlying factors.
