- Eating disorders (ED) are complex mental health conditions often associated with physiological changes.
- Pituitary-thyroid (PT) axis dysfunction has been anecdotally linked to ED symptomatology, but comprehensive correlational data are limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the correlations between plasma levels of key pituitary-thyroid hormones (TSH, FT4, FT3) and specific psychopathological symptoms in patients with various types of eating disorders.
- To compare hormone levels and their symptom correlations between ED patient subgroups and healthy controls.

- A cohort of 137 ED patients (including anorexia nervosa subtypes, bulimia nervosa, and EDNOS) and 30 controls were assessed.
- Plasma concentrations of TSH, FT4, and FT3 were measured using immunofluorimetry.
- Psychopathology was evaluated using the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2) and the Symptom Checklist-90 (HSCL-90).

- The observed correlations suggest a complex interplay between thyroid function and the psychopathology of eating disorders.
