A new multiple-choice question (MCQ) paper effectively assesses colonoscopy knowledge and demonstrates construct validity. Accelerated colonoscopy training weeks (ACTW) significantly improve doctors' core knowledge in the procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Medical Education
  • Clinical Skills Assessment

Background:

  • Core knowledge is essential for clinical competence in colonoscopy.
  • No validated methods currently exist in the UK for assessing colonoscopy knowledge.
  • A multiple-choice question (MCQ) paper was developed for an accelerated colonoscopy training week (ACTW).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate an MCQ paper for assessing colonoscopy knowledge.
  • To evaluate the construct validity of the developed MCQ paper.
  • To determine if an ACTW enhances participants' core knowledge in colonoscopy.

Main Methods:

  • Two 30-question MCQ papers (A and B) were designed.
  • Delegates at the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) 2004 meeting completed one paper.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Doctors attending the ACTW completed both papers pre- and post-course.
  • Main Results:

    • A significant difference in MCQ scores was observed between endoscopists with <200 (32.5%) and >200 (58.4%) colonoscopies performed (P < 0.0001).
    • Seventy-eight BSG delegates completed the MCQ.
    • Seventeen doctors attending the ACTW showed a significant improvement in mean scores from 57.2% to 67% (P = 0.003) after the course.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed MCQ paper can differentiate between endoscopists based on their experience levels.
    • The ACTW significantly enhances participants' core knowledge of colonoscopy.
    • This validated MCQ tool can be integrated into competency assessments for colonoscopy.
