Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Retinal Surgery

Context:

  • Retrospective analysis of 1212 patients (1252 eyes) admitted for ocular trauma.
  • Study period: January 1 - December 31, 2004, at the Medical University Hospital in Gdańsk.
  • Patient demographics: 746 males (mean age 46.8), 466 females (mean age 48.5).

Purpose:

  • To review the structure of patients admitted for ocular trauma.
  • To analyze the utilization of vitreo-retinal procedures in treating eye injuries.

Summary:

  • Most patients (1210/1252 eyes) received initial first aid and were discharged.
  • 42 patients required hospitalization; 37 underwent surgery.
  • Twenty-five eyes needed pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for conditions like retinal detachment, intraocular foreign bodies, and lens dislocation.
