Abstract:
Of the many sessions during the first day of the EPHAR meeting, several interesting topics emerged. Among these were a number of presentations investigating novel anti-inflammatory targets, including the search for a selective COX-2 inhibitor and the potential of cytokines/cytokine receptor targets (eg TNFalpha) as treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other chronic inflammatory conditions. Recent advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of diabetes and obesity have highlighted the need for a multi-therapeutic approach to treatment; several drugs in preclinical investigations were highlighted. Attention was drawn to the potential of AMPA/kainate receptors, historically investigated for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease, which are now showing promise as anti-ischemic therapeutics. Many novel therapeutics strategies were discussed in detail, including the CCK-B antagonists with considerable anxiolytic potential, mitochondrial mechanisms as targets for the treatment of brain injury and the use of stress-activated proteins in anti-ischemic research.
Insights
Researchers explored novel anti-inflammatory targets like COX-2 inhibitors and TNFalpha for rheumatoid arthritis. Promising therapeutics for diabetes, obesity, and neurodegenerative diseases were also discussed.

- Advances in understanding diabetes and obesity pathogenesis underscore the need for multifaceted treatment strategies.
- AMPA/kainate receptors, previously studied for neurodegenerative diseases, show potential in anti-ischemic therapies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review and present novel therapeutic strategies discussed at the EPHAR meeting.
- To highlight emerging targets for inflammatory conditions, metabolic disorders, and neurological injuries.
- To discuss the potential of various molecular targets in preclinical investigations.
Main Methods:
- Presentations and discussions from the EPHAR meeting.
- Review of preclinical investigations and novel therapeutic strategies.
- Exploration of molecular targets including receptors, cytokines, and proteins.
Main Results:
- Identification of selective COX-2 inhibitors and TNFalpha as potential anti-inflammatory agents for rheumatoid arthritis and chronic inflammatory conditions.
- Highlighting of several preclinical drugs for diabetes and obesity, indicating a need for multi-therapeutic approaches.
- Demonstration of AMPA/kainate receptors' promise in anti-ischemic therapeutics, alongside CCK-B antagonists for anxiolytic effects, mitochondrial mechanisms for brain injury, and stress-activated proteins in anti-ischemic research.

Cancer Therapies
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
