Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Gynecology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Intrauterine device (IUD) perforation of the bowel is an uncommon complication.
  • While often asymptomatic, unexplained abdominal pain is the most frequent symptom.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a case of delayed diagnosis of IUD bowel perforation.
  • To highlight a minimally invasive approach for IUD removal from the large bowel.

Main Methods:

  • A patient with a 7-year-old IUD presented with unexplained lower abdominal pain.
  • Laparoscopy identified the IUD deeply embedded in the rectum.
  • Successful removal was achieved via colonoscopy with a grasping snare after bowel preparation and antibiotics.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Colonoscopic removal of a rectally embedded IUD was successful.
  • The procedure avoided the need for laparotomy.

Conclusions:

  • Colonoscopy is a viable alternative to laparotomy for removing IUDs embedded in the large bowel.
  • Bowel preparation, antibiotics, and post-extraction evaluation are recommended.
