Summary

Progression from diffuse esophageal spasm (DES) to achalasia is uncommon. Some DES patients with low esophageal amplitude may develop increased contractions, potentially indicating a manometric shift over time.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate the rate of manometric progression from DES to achalasia.
  • To identify potential predictors of this manometric progression.

  • Retrospective review of manometry tracings from patients diagnosed with DES between 1992-2003.
  • Prospective follow-up manometry was performed on a cohort of eligible DES patients.
