Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Family Medicine
  • Physician Workforce Studies

Background:

  • Women constitute a significant portion of medical students and family medicine residents.
  • The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) lacks a parental leave policy for practicing physicians, unlike for residents.
  • This study aimed to determine the prevalence of maternity leave policies among practicing family physicians.

Framework:

  • A survey-based approach was used to gather data on maternity leave policies.
  • The study focused on practicing female physicians who are members of the AAFP.

Implementation:

  • A 14-item self-administered questionnaire was mailed to 940 randomly selected AAFP female members.
  • A 52% response rate was achieved, with respondents having a mean age of 35.

Implications:

  • Only one-third of physicians not in solo practice reported having a maternity leave policy.
  • Academic programs and larger group practices (8+ partners) were more likely to have policies with salary and benefits.
  • Ninety percent of respondents expressed a need for formal maternity leave guidelines for practicing family physicians.
