Higher forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) is linked to better physical health perception in adults. This study explored the connection between respiratory function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and HRQoL.
  • To determine if FEV1 predicts physical and mental functional health across the normal range of respiratory function.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based cross-sectional study involving 16,738 subjects aged 40-79 years.
  • HRQoL was assessed using the 36-item short form questionnaire.
  • Statistical analysis controlled for age, height, weight, BMI, smoking, physical activity, prevalent illness, and social class.

  • The findings highlight the importance of respiratory health for overall quality of life.
