Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Prostatic abscesses are uncommon but serious infections.
  • Diagnosis can be challenging, often relying on clinical signs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review diagnostic and treatment strategies for prostatic abscesses.
  • To identify the most reliable diagnostic methods and effective treatments.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 25 male patients with prostatic abscesses over 11 years.
  • Evaluation of diagnostic signs, imaging techniques, and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Prostatic fluctuation on digital rectal examination was a key clinical sign.
  • Transrectal ultrasound proved to be the most accurate diagnostic tool.
  • Transurethral drainage combined with antibiotic therapy yielded optimal results.

Conclusions:

  • Early recognition of clinical signs is crucial for prostatic abscess diagnosis.
  • Transrectal ultrasound is essential for confirming the diagnosis.
  • Transurethral drainage under antibiotic coverage represents the standard of care for effective treatment.
