Background:

  • Normal tension glaucoma (NTG) is a form of glaucoma where optic nerve damage occurs despite normal intraocular pressure.
  • The underlying mechanisms of NTG are not fully understood, but vascular and inflammatory factors are suspected.
  • C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of systemic inflammation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in patients diagnosed with normal tension glaucoma (NTG).

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted involving 20 patients with NTG and 30 healthy controls.
  • Plasma CRP levels were quantified using a sensitive CRP assay kit.
  • Demographic data including age, sex, and BMI were compared between groups.

  • Plasma CRP levels were significantly higher in NTG patients compared to controls (median 3.20 mg/dL vs. 0.5 mg/dL, P < 0.001).
  • Mean plasma CRP levels were also significantly elevated in the NTG group (3.21 mg/dL vs. 0.85 mg/dL, P < 0.01).
  • Demographic parameters were similar between the NTG cases and control groups.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are associated with normal tension glaucoma (NTG).
  • These findings support the hypothesis that vascular inflammation may contribute to the pathogenesis of NTG.
