Summary

This study found no increased incidence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) in children with juvenile autoimmune thyroiditis (JAT). The observed rate of MVP in these young patients was similar to the general pediatric population.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Autoimmune thyroid disease is linked to mitral valve prolapse (MVP) in adults.
  • Juvenile autoimmune thyroiditis (JAT) is a common autoimmune condition in children and adolescents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of MVP in pediatric patients diagnosed with JAT.
  • To investigate a potential association between JAT and MVP in a young population.

Main Methods:

  • Cardiac echocardiography (M-mode, 2D, Doppler) was utilized.
  • 23 pediatric patients (21 female, 2 male) with JAT were evaluated.
  • Median age of participants was 12 years (range 5-20 years).

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evidence suggestive of MVP was found in only one patient (4.3% incidence).
  • This incidence rate is comparable to that observed in the healthy pediatric population.
  • No statistically significant increase in MVP was detected in children with JAT.
  • Conclusions:

    • The incidence of mitral valve prolapse is not elevated in children and adolescents with juvenile autoimmune thyroiditis.
    • Findings suggest JAT does not confer an increased risk for MVP in pediatric patients.
    • Further research may explore underlying mechanisms if any subtle associations exist.
