Summary

Creativity is linked to bipolar disorder (BD) and may be inherited. Children with BD or at high risk show enhanced creativity, particularly in disliking simple images, suggesting a shared genetic link.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Genetics
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with creativity in individuals.
  • Familial transmission of both creativity and BD is suggested.
  • Mechanisms of intergenerational creativity transmission in BD families are unstudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare creativity in bipolar parents and their offspring with BD or ADHD versus healthy controls.
  • To investigate the intergenerational transmission of creativity in families with genetic susceptibility to BD.

Main Methods:

  • Creativity assessed using the Barron-Welsh Art Scale (BWAS) in adults with BD, their offspring with BD or ADHD, and healthy controls.
  • BWAS subscale and total scores compared across groups.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Adults with BD scored significantly higher on BWAS Dislike subscale than controls.
  • Offspring with BD and ADHD showed significantly higher BWAS Dislike scores than healthy children.
  • Offspring with BD and ADHD had higher BWAS Total scores, though not statistically significant after age adjustment.

Conclusions:

  • Supports an association between BD and creativity, with potential familial transmission.
  • First study showing higher creativity in children with or at risk for BD.
  • Enhanced dislike for simple/symmetric images may underlie creativity in BD, potentially linked to negative affect access.
