Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

Background:

  • Problem-based learning (PBL) is a pedagogical approach used in medical education.
  • The role of tutor expertise in PBL effectiveness is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of tutor content expertise on learning issues generated during PBL tutorials.
  • To assess how tutor expertise influences the quality and congruence of learning issues with case objectives.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy medical students were divided into ten small groups.
  • Groups were facilitated by either content experts or non-experts in simulated-patient case encounters.
  • Data collected on learning issues generated and time spent addressing deficiencies.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Groups with expert tutors generated twice as many learning issues per case.
  • Learning issues generated with expert tutors were three times more congruent with case objectives.
  • Expert-tutored groups spent twice as much time resolving identified learning deficiencies.

Conclusions:

  • Tutor content expertise is crucial for effective PBL.
  • Tutors should possess strong knowledge of cases and PBL facilitation skills.
  • Enhancing tutor expertise can optimize student learning in PBL environments.
